Land Shadows

This novel follows Murdoch McNeil, a boy who survives the Highland Clearances, only to arrive orphaned in New York City in 1851. Taken in by a powerful attorney, he rises from law clerk to lawyer in the turbulent 1860s. Fueled by a desire for justice—and revenge—he masterminds a daring land fraud against the English and Dutch-owned Maxwell Land Grant. To solidify his deception, he relocates to New Mexico, embedding himself in the very land he manipulated.

But the West is a land of shifting power, where survival depends on more than just the law—where the foundation of settlement is built on fraud, power, and the brutal displacement of those who came before.
